Social Science One(SSO) has first gathered at NTU Social Science building on September 4th to share study research and clarify the goal of SSO as well as the challenges Facebook now facing.
This time, apart from inviting plenty of scholars of the nation, we also invited overseas professors from Australia, America, Japan, Korea, and one of them is Nate Persily, the current professor of Stanford University, also the co-founder of Social Science One. SSO's establishment purpose is to fund an innovative intellectual productive organization and system, to balance the security and privacy of the information with the public profit brought by social science, and hope to establish a strict assurance system between academic and the owner of platform information(so far is Facebook). SSO's first program is "Social Media's Influence on Election and Democracy."
The event of abusion private information by Cambridge Analytica directly promoted the establishment of SSO, but the effects of social media have driven researchers worldwide to study their effects. The sharing outcome of the meeting; for example, the false news in India, the extreme argument in Hong Kong have all showed that issues should be locally understood and collaborated with international information.
We also invited Max, the Manager of Public Policy of Facebook in Taiwan, to share the mechanism of protecting users' information and to illustrate how difficult it is to recognize the false news. During the conference, scholars interacted with each other from both Facebook worldwide and Taiwan’s point of view.
